Today’s travel went off without a hitch, and we arrived at
our apartment in Warsaw mid-afternoon.
After taking in the view from our 15th floor balcony, we
headed off on foot to do some exploring.
We walked through both the New and Old Towns, though their
appearance has nothing to do with their true ages. The city was largely destroyed during World
War II and the historic center has been rebuilt to look just as it had
before. The care and painstaking
attention to detail with which this was done is a moving reflection of the
citizens’ desire that future generations would have a sense of their past. The pretty squares, many treed parks, and
narrow streets were just lovely. Poland
is a devoutly Catholic country and this city could almost rival Rome in the
number of churches per block!
The city’s sad history in the last century was movingly
represented in the demarcation of the ghetto wall in the streets of the New
Town and the monuments to those lost in the Russian invasion and to the heroes
of the Warsaw Uprising.
After walking for several hours, we refueled with dinner in
a beer hall, picked up some grocery essentials, and called it a day.
