This morning brought another ride through the Polish
agricultural countryside, this time on a modern toll road. At midday, we arrived at Wroclaw and checked
in to our small apartment, situated just a few steps from the historic market
square. This is another enormous plaza,
with the massive town hall and arcades of shops and restaurants in the center.
We spent the afternoon wandering around this city on the
Oder River. Until the end of World War II, this area belonged to Germany and
the city was known as Breslau. With its
many bridges and a cluster of islands, now it’s sometimes referred to as the
Venice of Poland. We stopped in several
churches (there are scores of them just in the old town center), walked along
the riverfront and university district, crossed over to the tiny Sand Island,
and then to the Cathedral Island, home to what’s known as the ecclesiastical
district, where every building seems to have religious significance, present or
past.
After visiting the cathedral (one
of several in this city!), we took an elevator ride to the terrace atop one of
its spires for a panoramic view of the city, its bridges, river, and islands.
A stroll back on the riverfront promenade brought us to the
city market -- two levels of everything from pumpkins to purses – then, another
visit to the town square and “home” for R and R.
After dinner at a small Polish restaurant nearby in the
university district, we strolled along the river and into the Market Square for
nighttime photos – of course!
